WAEC explanation for exam leakage “pathetic” – UEW Council Chair

Chairman of the Council of University of Education Winneba , Dr. Emmanuel Kenneth Andoh, has described the explanation by the West African Examination Council downplaying the recent paper leakage in the country as “pathetic”.

He said the explanation that what happened was not an exam leakage but rather a “pre-information or a foreknowledge” is unfortunate.

On April 6, head of WAEC, Reverend Dr. Sam Nmai Ollenu discredited reports that some of the papers for the 2016 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSC) leaked.

According to him, some of the students rather had “foreknowledge” of some of the papers before entering the examination hall.

Drawing a difference between a leakage and foreknowledge, Dr. Ollenu said a paper is said to have leaked if it circulates in the public some 24 hours or more before the students sit for the paper.

Foreknowledge, however, occurs when the paper circulates few hours before the paper is written.
But addressing students, parents and faculty heads at the 20th Congregation Ceremony of the school, Dr. Andoh said: “No amount of jingoistic semantics will cure the snapshot shame until WAEC accept the responsibility for the mess, makes amends and takes the necessary steps to prevent any future leaks”.

He also charged other stakeholders of the educational sector such as the Ministry of Education, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Tertiary Education Workers Union (TEWU) to collaborate with WAEC officials to end the menace of examination leakage in the country.

On his part, Vice-Chancellor of UEW, Professor Mawutor Avorke, urged students to be innovative so as to help address the unemployment situation in the country.
